My interest was piqued when I read about how several celebs’ children were enjoying Kiwi Crate in a recent issue of US Weekly. I reached out to the PR department who provided me with press materials and a sample to review.

Launched last fall, Kiwi Crate is a wonderful new monthly art project by subscription service for kids, created by parents. Each month, you’ll receive at least two inspired activities and materials designed to get them to create and explore.

Kiwi Crate was built out of a passion for hands-on fun that encourages creativity and curiosity in children. Kiwi Crate is designed to spark kids’ natural creativity and curiosity with hand-selected and kid-tested projects and materials. Kiwi Crate was created to make it fun, easy and delightful to spend time building, exploring and creating together. Founded by Sandra Oh Lin, mom of two, the Kiwi Crate team is now comprised of creative parents who dream up the projects, valued experts who review them, and a community of kid testers who keeps us on our toes and ensures the projects are fun and engaging.

Our green box arrived addressed to my son. When I opened the box up, I was immediately impressed with the pair of child-size scissors that were included along with the following cute note:

The crates are specifically designed for children ages 3-7. The company takes a lot of care to design their crates in a way that is open ended so that although children across the age range may have different outcomes, they will all enjoy interacting with the projects and materials.

So my two and a half son son is younger than the intended targeted age and arts-and-crafts is not his forte. Instead of doing it as a big activity, I am breaking it down to small projects for him to do with a grown-up’s help. He did enjoy painting the planets blue and silver. I would definitely recommend Kiwi Crate for older children and those who enjoy doing art projects with different mediums. The quality of the supplies is excellent. Can I just say how excited I am by the bright, colorful and shiny pipe cleaners! The kit also comes with detailed instructions which are easy to understand and follow. (Thank you so much, Kiwi Crate.)

If the $19.95 a month is a little much for you year round, 3 and 6 month subscriptions are also available, as well as party crates.

Learn more and find out how to sign-up for your fun-filled subscription at kiwicrate.com and don’t miss the Kiwi Crate blog for even more helpful ideas.

DISCLAIMER: I did receive a sample crate for review but all opinions expressed are my own.

With Mother’s Day right around the corner, we are starting a 3-part Mother’s Day Gift Guide Series this week. Today Lainie is sharing 8 great Mother’s Day gift options to get us thinking of what is the best gift for our mom!

To me, the best gifts are when you give something that you know the recipient really covets but wouldn’t justify spending the money to buy for herself. A gift is not something a person needs. There’s a big difference between needs and wants/desires. But especially for Mother’s Day, the family needs to lavish Mom with something special to show you just how special you are to your family. I have spend a lot of time coming up with the following suggestions. They are all items I would be thrilled to receive. (In fact, I couldn’t help treating myself to a few as I was discovering them) Hopefully there’s something here you would enjoy yourself:

1. For My Children: A Mother’s Journal of Memories, Wishes & Wisdom

An easy-to-follow and heartfelt journal for moms to pass down their life story and joy of motherhood to their children
As a mother ages and sees her children go off into the world, she begins reflecting on her time as a mom and yearns to share memories with her kids. Beautifully designed and illustrated, this perfect gift contains creative prompts that spark Mom’s recollections of fun family vacations, favorite childhood games, and special holidays. The thought-provoking queries allow Mom to delve into her own lifetime of experiences — her childhood and school years, falling in love and getting married, and, most of all, having and raising children. This collection of fill-in-the-blank lists is the easiest way for a mother to record on paper answers to the questions her children never thought to ask but will love to discover. Author Dionna Ford is a lawyer turned work-at-home mama of her amazing son, Kieran (with #2 on the way in November 2011).

2. Eleni’s New York – Mother’s Day

What better way to have fun with your kids with this whimsical color-your-own gift box? Set of 5 Edible Ink Markers included 22 white-iced sugar cookies. Check out the other designs available include for the mom-to-be and fashionista mom. Hand decorated custom gourmet nut-free kosher cookies delivered nationwide.

3. Sea Bags for Crewcuts Baby Tote

The new Sea Bags for Crewcuts baby tote and diaper pouches could withstand a raging storm, let alone a sippy spill or two. Crafted in Portland, Maine, from reclaimed sails, each bag is made entirely by hand (so no two will ever be exactly alike) and crisscrossed with ultra-bright see-worthy stripes for a can’t-miss take on summertime style. Durable and water resistant, the exclusive-to-J.Crew tote features a heavy-duty metal clip closure, a hand-spliced rope handle and a zip-up interior pocket that’s just the right size for stowing all your essentials.

4. Twitter Plate

Every mom wants to open up a jewelry box. This twitter name plate won’t break the bank and shows how hip, trendy and with the times Mom is. I need a @meandbabyi one (hint, hint, to my husband) As seen on The Today Show. It takes 5 weeks to order so mom will have to wait past Mother’s Day to wear it, but it’ll be worth the wait.

6. Mother’s Day White Vegan Classics – Tom’s ($54 plus shipping)

It’s funny because this will be at least the third time I am blogging about TOMS yet I didn’t own a pair myself. I will soon because when I found these online exclusive limited edition babies with my passion/career/title scribbled all over them, I had to treat myself. Can’t wait to wear them on Mother’s Day and to other mom-related events and activities.

7. Ricardo Rojas Merchandise for the Shop to Erase MS Multiple …

Perhaps this appeals to me because my mother and sister loved dancing the Flamenco in our kitchen growing up. or maybe because my son enjoys shaking marcas so much. Or because bright, vibrant colors are so in right now. Celebrity hairstylist, Ricardo Rojas, has established his reputation as one of the world’s leading hairstylists by aligning virtuoso technique with a finely tuned understanding of his clients’ individuality. Argentinian born Rojas, celebrates his “roots” with the launch of his Tango inspired styling brush. Painted in the bright colors of La Boca, Buenos Aires (birthplace of Tango) with hand sketched images of the dancers, these one of a kind brushes evoke a bygone sense of glamour with each stroke of the hair. 20% of the proceeds of the Tango brush set will support MS research a cause I hold near and dear to my heart since my own mother is afflicted by it.

Stokke is Norway’s top baby product company that is probably most well-known for their celebrity-style stroller, the Xplory, and their grow-with-your-child high chair, the Tripp Trapp. Stokke’s mission is to make products that “are designed and constructed specifically to encourage child development and to strengthen the bonds between parents and children in those crucial early weeks, months and years. We believe it is in a child’s best interests to be as close as possible to his or her parents, and to be placed in an environment of genuine safety and security, free to learn and to grow.”

With their Scandinavian thinking, they have recently ventured into the world of baby carriers. The Stokke MyCarrier is a top-of-the-line, unique carrier that is both versatile and sporty to appeal to active families.

This 3-in-1 carrier boasts some stand-out features that will make the carrying experience better and more comfortable for both parent and baby. This three piece carrier grows with your child and accommodates a child from birth until three years old.

I’m not going to lie, the MyCarrier looks very intimidating out of the box. We are talking three separate pieces and lots of clips, buckles and fasteners. The carrier comes with two baby carrier harnesses (one for front carry and another for back carry) and a parent harness.

While it’s a little overwhelming with the three separate pieces at first, we were able to figure it out very quickly (at least how to get it on!) without reading the manual. BUT make sure you read the instructions because a proper fit will make all the difference in the world if you are baby wearing comfortably or not. If you feel uncomfortable, go back to the instructions and make sure you have everything in the right place. For example, the safety carabiners on each side should be level with your armpit. If they are not, you might be unnecessarily uncomfortable. So, while you can figure out how to get it on by just looking at the box, it’s important to read the manual.

Parent Harness

The parent harness sports a wide hip belt that helps to distribute the baby’s weight properly. The portion of the carrier that wraps around your waist is padded in both back and front and sports a long enough adjustable belt that fits both the skinny-mini mamas up to the plus-size parents comfortably.

The small pockets on the sides are a great addition for items as large as an iPhone to loose things such as binkies and change.

The parent harness also sports a ergonomically shaped back plate to help keep your back and neck comfortable. This includes a removable aluminum back support that is optional for front carry but required for baby carry. Since the back support is rigid (it literally is a flat aluminum bar!), I not only felt like this made me more comfortable without any back pain but that it gave me better posture. I’m a shoulder schlumper sometimes and that back support really straightened me up so I chose to keep the support bar in for back AND front carry.

Front Carry

The MyCarrier allows you to front carry your baby in two ways: facing inwards from birth or facing outwards when baby can hold up his/her head unassisted and is ready to face out at the world and explore their surroundings.

I love that when your baby faces inwards, they are seated in the “Happy Hips” position that has their knees up and around you and their back, butt and thighs all supported. This makes for a more comfortable riding baby which means a happier baby.

Back Carry

The back carry option is for babies who can sit up unassisted and are taller than 28″. While the same parent harness is needed, you will have to switch to the back carry harness to accommodate this position.

As opposed to struggling to get a child in a carrier that you are already wearing on your back, I love that you can put the baby in the carrier first, then put the baby AND carrier on your back. It’s much safer this way as I struggle to easily get a child in a back carrier otherwise without a team of help.

Material & Safety

I love that the MyCarrier is made with soft, organic cotton with no harmful chemicals. This is especially great for those babies with sensitive skin.

I found the carrier to be very sturdy, secure and safe and I love that the carabiners that attach the carry harness to the parent harness at the top are double-locking for extra safety.

The carrier is machine washable and the stitching, buckles, carabiners and belts are all top-notch and strong. I have to say with all this sturdiness and quality comes a bit of weight. This is one of the heaviest carriers (besides those frame carriers and backpack carriers!) that I worn. Not a deal breaker because it’s comfortable to wear but I did want to mention it. Also, all the padding and the back support, plus the two carry harnesses, make this a more bulky carrier than some. This isn’t one you are going to be able to stuff into a small diaper bag. It has some size.

One other thing to keep in mind, is that even though the material is breathable, the carrier can warm you up on hot days especially the back piece that covers quite a bit of your back. For this reason, I would recommend dressing just a big lighter than you normally would for the weather to keep you cool.

Price & Colors

The Stokke MyCarrier is one of the most expensive baby carriers on the market retailing for $250. While Stokke products are not usually for the budget-conscious parents, it will last you from birth through 3 years old (33 lbs) and offers you three carry options.

The MyCarrier comes in three colors: red, brown and dark navy and comes with a 3 year Stokke warranty.

Overall

I like the Stokke MyCarrier. I know the price will deter many parents but for a well-made carrier that is not only comfortable for both parent and baby but offers three different carry options, I think it is worth it if it is in your budget. I think back support for the parent alone is worth it for this one!

Pros:

Exremely sturdy, secure and safe.

Who doesn’t like hands-free?!

3 different carry options

Usable from birth to 3 years old

Comfortable. I think I might start wearing the parent harness with the back support while I work at my computer just to keep my posture better! (Yes, I’m wearing it right now!)

Easy to use once you get the hang of it

Organic materials and no harmful chemicals

Cons:

Overwhelming at first glance.

Bulky and heavy

Can heat you up if you are overdressed

Can’t stuff in a small diaper bag

Expensive

There is something so adorable about little ones in pajamas. Maybe it’s because they look so deliciously wholesome and innocent.

I have been a fan of Bedhead Pajamas for decades. I wore them as I watched Will & Grace knowing that Debra Messing did too. BedHead Pajamas are loved –and worn – by fave celebs such as Jennifer Aniston, Kate Hudson and Oprah Winfrey. And that’s not all; the design-driven PJ’s have put in more TV appearances than most starlets. The brand has become an integral part of the Hollywood community thanks to the flagship store on trendy West 3rd Street where founder Renee Claire can often be found designing the next batch of must-have styles.

So as a mom I was beyond thrilled when I learned that the luxe pajama and loungewear brand has gone baby crazy and this spring BedHead’s signature , vibrant patterns are now available for the newest member of the family starting at size three months.

Dress up your – or someone elseʼs – bundle of joy in the Baby BedHead onesie + hat set (SRP $42.00). The patterns are bright (daisies stripes and big top animals) and the style is too cute for words. Any babe clad in BedHead is bound to win best dressed.

It’s truly a family affair with men, teens, ‘tweens and tots not being left out of the pajama party. For Daddy, there are cotton robes, PJs and boxers in smart stripes and classic solids. (Great gift idea for Father’s Day)

And a bevy of options from ‘Mommy + Me’ sets to classic stretch styles. My absolute favorite is the Mod Hearts Pajama set both available for women and their young daughters. I wasn’t quite as wowed by the selection available for boys. Which often seems to be the case in the wonderful world of boys fashions. Although the Blue 3D Stretch Kids Classic PJ (1002-K-334) and Blue 3D Stripe Classic PJ 1002-C-44 is pretty cute.

BedHead Pajamas are sold at its flagship stores in Los Angeles + New York City as well as specialty boutiques and fine departments stores including Saks Fifth Avenue and Neiman Marcus. Or get your goods online at www.bedheadpjs.com.

Night, night! Sleep tight! Don’t let the bedbugs bite!

Valco Baby has been hard at work for 2012. With many new products in the works, the Zee in their first new addition of the year. This is Valco’s new “hybrid” stroller that is lightweight weighing in at just under 18 lbs. The Zee sports front swivel wheels, rear suspension, compact fold, automatic lock, and large canopy. Plus, the Zee will take a variety of accessories to make it very versatile.

The seat on the Zee has a weight capacity of 44 lbs and measures 14″ wide, with an 18″ seatback and a measurement of 26″ from seatback to canopy. Even though the actual seatback is short, the tall canopy measurement makes up for it. While the non-padded, 5-point harness with hard-to-do Valco buckle will keep your little one safely in the seat, the adjustable footrest will keep them comfortable.

The seat sports a baby bumper bar but there is no parent or baby tray, as well as, no cup holders. You can, however, purchase a Valco baby snack tray separately that works with the Zee and replaces the bumper bar. We love that the bumper bar is covered in the same fabric (which is removable) as the seat instead of foam. We hate when our baby gets a mouth full of foam from chewing on some of the other stroller bumper bars out there. There is a strap recline but since it is the easy “one touch” Valco recline, it is just as easy to do as our beloved bar recline. You can recline the seat to any position with one hand including nearly flat for newborns.

While lightweight strollers usually have teeny-tiny baskets, Valco Baby didn’t get that memo because the basket on the Zee is a great size! This deep basket will accommodate a medium to large diaper bag easily.

The Zee canopy is sturdy and rounded for more headroom and sports a mesh peek-a-boo window with cover. At first glance, the canopy isn’t huge until you realize it is the fabulous Valco EXpanda hood that zips open to reveal another whole canopy panel for full sun coverage.

The one-piece handlebar isn’t adjustable and measures 40″ from ground to where you place your hands. While it is perfect for the average mom (at about 5″4), if you are super tall, you might want to check it out first. A telescoping handle would be our one suggestion on the next version of the Zee to accommodate all our taller parent friends with a long stride.

The maneuverability on the Zee is fabulous! Once you push it, you’ll know what we are talking about. It glides along and you can even maneuver it with one hand with a small child aboard. The 7″ front and 9″ rear hard rubber, tubeless tires are great on smooth surfaces and you’ll never have to worry about a puncture or a flat with these. You can tackle your typical kid all-terrain (grass, playground mulch, small rocks) with the Zee if you lock the front wheels straight. There is also a flip-flop friendly, one-touch brake system to lock the stroller into place.

The Zee boasts the flattest fold of all Valco Baby strollers. It’s a two handed fold but it’s easy to do and ends in a rather flat package. There is an automatic lock on the side but you might have to push down a bit on the folded package to get it engaged. We still love the auto lock though!

Weighing in at just under 18 lbs, this full-featured stroller is still great to travel with and won’t have you breaking your back to get it in and out of your trunk. All the wheels pop right off if you want an even more compact package (but that is so not needed!) or if a good wheel cleaning is necessary.

A great feature of the Zee (just like the Matrix and the TriMode) is that it works with the Valco Baby Joey Toddler Seat to turn it into a double. Even though we didn’t test that feature, we think the Valco Baby quality has made the Zee sturdy enough for a second rider (not a huge rider!) to be on board in the Joey seat as long as you make sure the main seat is always occupied with your main rider. The toddler seat attaches to the front of the stroller (in place of the bumper bar!) for an older child to hitch a ride turning it into a double in no time at all. We found this seat is great for closely spaced siblings when you would like to pass on the huge double stroller. The toddler seat attaches and detaches easily so that you can have the option of a double when you need it and a single when you don’t.

That isn’t all with versatility of the Zee. It also takes the Valco Baby Hitch Hiker (riding board) for an older child to hop on for a ride, the Husssh Bassinet (or regular Valco Baby Bassinet) to turn it into a pram and an infant car seat adapter (for the Graco, Maxi Cosi, Peg Perego, Chicco, and Combi infant car seat) to make it a travel system. The car seat adapter does go into the same slot as the toddler seat would, so you cannot use the toddler seat and the car seat adapter at the same time. All these accessories are sold separately. A great cup holder, child snack tray, footmuff and rain cover are some of the other accessories sold separately for the Zee.

The Zee is available in three colors: Sapphire (tan and blue), Jet (black) and Citrine (yellow). (The Citrine isn’t our first choice because the pale yellow is very, very pale. As in will-get-horribly-dirty-pale!) The Zee retails for $329 for the single and $499 for the twin. That’s right, the Zee comes in a side-by-side double version too!

Overall, the Zee is a great lightweight, easy-to-fold stroller that is stocked with features and versatility. If you are looking for a stroller that can do it all from birth to about 4 years old and can be a single or a double, you might want to consider the Valco Baby Zee.

While this isn’t the usual type of baby gear that we review, I think it is a must-have for all parents with an iPhone 4. If you have been with us for a while, you know that I have a very close relationship with my iPhone. The kind of relationship that requires it to stay by my side all the time. Okay, unless one of my kids have swiped it and are playing Angry Birds or Fruit Ninja or something. Even if you aren’t the type of parent to let your child play with your iPhone, you will love LifeProof! LifeProof is a new company based out of San Diego that makes the BEST cases for your iPhone hands down.

The LifeProof case is designed to let you use your iPhone in any wet, dirty or rough situation! Isn’t that every situation with a child?!? The case is water proof, dirt proof, snow proof and shock proof. That is a lot of proof that it is the perfect case for a parent.

Before I get into all the “proofs” of the LifeProof case, I want to tell you what I like about it.

First, it is extremely lightweight and compact. This case isn’t going to weigh your phone down (less than 1 oz) or bulk it up so that it looks like a George Costanza wallet in a dad’s pocket. The case is extremely thin and keeps your phone almost the same size as it would be without a case.

Second, all your iPhone functions are still usable with the case on. You can adjust the volume, take photos, Facetime, use the touch screen, listen to music, and even charge the phone with the case on. There is really no reason that you ever have to take the case off.

Third, the camera is not affected at all. The LifeProof case features double anti-reflective coated optical glass lenses that fit over your camera lense to keep your crystal clear photo and video quality.

Fourth, the case comes in four colors to suit your taste. I chose the black but you could also choose a pink, purple or white one.

Basically all the functions of your phone work the exact same. Okay, except one. My only very minor complaint with the case is that when you use the speakerphone, the speaker is a bit quieter than without the case. No biggie though. The rest of the features more than make up for that! I have no problem using the touch screen, hearing a phone call or taking photos/videos.

Now, let’s get to the “proofs”. My favorite feature of the case is hand-down the water proof feature. It isn’t “water-resistant” it is WATER PROOF! As in your toddler dumps your iPhone in the toilet proof! Your 4 year old who can’t swim jumps in the pool and you have to jump in after him with your iPhone in your pocket proof! (This happened to us and we were then one iPhone down last summer!). The case is so water proof that you can take it swimming up to 6.6 feet, in the shower or even surfing if you are so inclined. While I don’t plan to take mine swimming, I love that it will keep my iPhone safe at the pool, at the water park, near any toilet or really any body of water whatsoever. I tested the waterproof feature by holding the LifeProof case with iPhone in it under the faucet and by dunking it in a glass of water. The iPhone was unaffected and working like new.

If you plan to use your phone in the water with the LifeProof case on, it is important to know that your phone’s touch screen will not work underwater. That is the technology’s problem, not LifeProof. You can however start the video above water and take the phone under water to get underwater video of the kids. That’s pretty darn cool if you ask me! Also, while you can’t use the usual shutter button on the touch screen under water to take photos, if your iPhone is running iOS 5, it implements a feature that allows the volume increase button to function as a shutter switch for the camera. If not using iOS 5, you can “Jailbreak” your iPhone and map your picture shutter button to a volume button. You can also download the CameraButtons from the Cydia app store and bind the Volume Up key for Camera shutter. So you can see that even though the touch screen may not work under water, there are ways to still use all your photography skills.

The second proof is dirt proof. Ever had to dig mud or dirt out of your iPhone speakers? Yeah, me neither and I don’t plan to. Thanks to LifeProof it will never be an issue. If the case falls in mud or dirt, I can simply wash the case under water and dry it off and it will be good as new.

The third proof is snow proof. I live in Chicago where the winters can be brutal. No need to worry about a dropped iPhone in the snow with this case. Or maybe you’re a skier or snowboarder and need to stay connected on the slopes. The LifeProof will protect your phone there too.

The fourth proof is shock proof. Ever had a 2 1/2 year old throw your iPhone during a temper tantrum? I have. It’s not pretty. With my new case, my iPhone will just bounce and be good as new. There will be no need for a time-out for anything (or anyone) but the toddler.

I could go on and on about how much I love the LifeProof case, but I think you should just get one for yourself and check it out. Retailing at $79.99, the case isn’t cheap but with all the “proofs” it is more than worth it. Remember, water destroys an iPhone. and replacing one can be expensive. That’s why LifeProof is worth it to me! You can buy the case on their website HERE or pick one up at Best Buy.

Just think of all the wet, dirty and rough situations you and your kids will put your iPhone in. The LifeProof just protects it and basically keeps it “life proof”. Have an iPad 2? LifeProof is coming out with a case for that too! Stay tuned!

For more information about LifeProof, visit their website HERE.

Disclosure: *Thanks to LifeProof for sending us a case for review.

On Tuesday, April 10, go barefoot to raise awareness of the millions of kids who go without footwear every day. Every pair of TOMS purchased, a pair of new shoes goes to a child in need.

One Day Without Shoes event is an annual event when TOMS raises awareness of the impact a pair of shoes can have on a child’s life. Last year, people went without shoes at over 1,000 events in over 25 countries around the globe.

Millions of children live without proper footwear, exposing them to injury and disease. TOMS was founded on the premise that with every pair of shoes someone purchases, a pair of new shoes will be given to a child in need. One for One™. One Day Without Shoes was created to call attention to the need for shoes around the world and the issues surrounding that need.

One Day Without Shoes participants can go to www.OneDayWithoutShoes.com to get the latest updates, create and join events in their area, download an event tool kit, upload photos and see what others will do on April 10.

Essie created “Barefoot in Blue” exclusively for this TOMS event.

Iphone, ipad, Blackberry, Android, we know them all, they’re everywhere and quite frankly, we love them. Personally, I can’t live without my iphone, but I do remember being a teenager and somehow surviving without a cell phone. Now I think I’d be tempted to put one on my daughter at all times when she’s a teen, like some kind of tracking device.

We are all also very aware that radiation comes with all of these devices, and it is a concern. So let me introduce you to Pong, the leading maker of cell phone and iPad cases that protect users from wireless device radiation. Made by a group of scientists from institutions such as Princeton and Harvard, these are a variety of fun colored cases that not only are durable, have shock absorption and scratch protection, but most importantly, Pong states

“Laboratories certified by the Federal Communications Commission (“FCC”) have confirmed that Pong’s patented solution reduces the amount of EMR absorbed into the user’s head by between 60% and 95%, as measured on the world-standard Specific Absorption Rate or “SAR” scale.

Pong achieves these remarkable results by integrating specially tuned antennaes into each Pong case. Unlike antenna “shields” that purport to “contain” EMR (and, as a result, diminish or block altogether a phone’s operation), Pong redirects EMR away from the user’s head and toward the cell tower. Pong users, therefore, enjoy protection from the growing list of serious health risks associated with microwave exposure from regular cell phone use. Because Pong devices are optimized to protect a cell phone’s Total Radiated Power or “TRP” — signal strength and performance are not compromised.”

"Here honey, tell Daddy to bring home some take out, I don't feel like cooking tonight"

What more could a person ask for? Pong even states that they are so confident that you will be satisfied with your phone while using their case, that they offer the Pong Pledge: If you notice a loss of cell signal from using your case, simply return the case within 30 days of receipt and Pong will refund your purchase price. No questions asked.

The cases work across the world, and cost between $49.99 and $99.99.
