Dear Stranger/Baby Bump Toucher

Print Friendly

Dear Stranger Lady,

Thank you for putting me in an awkward position and asking to feel my bump. I’m not a person who can say no when asked sweetly, however, I’ll be honest, I don’t like it. And I’m pretty sure other women like me don’t like it either. It’s weird, inappropriate, uncomfortable and did I mention weird?

I have a question for you and all those like you- don’t you find it just a little odd to ask if you can feel a complete stranger’s body part? Why do you think it’s okay if there’s a baby in there? I would never ask to  touch your nose, even though I might be fascinated by what’s in there.

But I must at least thank you for asking at all. The people that really bother me are the strangers that don’t ask and just start rubbing my belly. It’s a baby people, not a genie. Like the time the random sales assistant put both hands on me because she felt the ultrasound was wrong and was convinced of the sex of my baby due to the shape of my tummy- shocking. Just shocking. I did not give her any indication she could touch me, so who does that?! But I smile a fake smile because the alternative would be unpleasant. For her.

So, dear stranger, please leave pregnant women alone. If women want you to touch their belly, they will wear a t-shirt that states so. Otherwise, hands off. Before we make you uncomfortable and grab your butt.

Thanking you,

Mama-to-be
