If you’re a mom you know exactly what I’m talking about. Those little habits that nag at you and wear you down every single day. They’re preventing you from reaching your maximum potential, productivity, and happiness as a mother. I am a (self-proclaimed but in some circles that totally counts) bad habit breaking expert and here are my tips.
Well, if you follow me on Twitter and have seen my super late night tweets you know I am a filthy awful liar but look past that for a second. I am habitually guilty of this bad habit. I struggle to get the kids in bed, succeed after an hour or so, stare at a wall in victory, tweet and brag about all the wonderful things I am going to do, and then find myself at 1 a.m. browsing Pinterest on my phone.
Nothing accomplished and up late. Again. It’s a vicious cycle that leads to constant sleep deprivation which then leads me to eat tablespoons of sugar disguised as a small cup of coffee. It’s awful.
Break the habit: Download an app that slaps you in the face if you are messing around on your phone or computer past 11:00 p.m. Just kidding. Sadly this app doesn’t exist yet.
Set a strict bedtime for yourself and hold yourself accountable. Reward yourself when you follow through. It is so worth it. When you are well rested you’re at your best as a person and mother. You owe it to yourself.
I know it’s so tempting to while the hours away once the kids are asleep. For many of us it’s the only alone time we have but what good is it if we are so tired during our free time that we become useless, ice cream snarfing zombies?
Go to bed on time every night for a week. You’ll thank me later.
Eating the kids’ leftovers.
Day in and day out you serve your kids (mostly) nutritious and thoughtfully put together meals. Toddlers are fickle creatures with constantly changing palettes. One day you can’t keep enough sweet corn in the house and the next your toddler has declared war on anything yellow. No one likes to throw away food. So what’s a mom to do? Eat the delicious, buttery sweet corn leftovers?
Don’t do it. Those calories add up and next thing you know your yoga pants start looking like tights (and not in a good way).
Break the habit: Don’t eat anything off your child’s plate unless it’s a green vegetable. If they are constantly leaving you tempting leftovers consider serving smaller but more frequent portions.
Starting dinner too late.
I can’t be the only one who finds herself playing with the kids without a care in the world when suddenly it’s 4:00 p.m. and dinner is nowhere in sight. Panic ensues. I do this more often that I would like to admit. It isn’t a huge deal since my husband is always up for a fast and greasy alternative but I like to cook most of our meals so I try to avoid it.
Waiting until the last-minute to start dinner always stresses me out. I’ve got chopping and simmering ahead of me with two toddlers at my feet and it makes me crazy.
Break the habit: Review your meal plan and try to do as much advanced preparation as your schedule allows. If I find myself with some downtime during the weekend I pre chop and bag fruits and veggies.
Otherwise review your menu each morning and try to break up the tasks throughout the day. At the very least when you realize its 4:00 p.m. you’ll have your ingredients, tools, and spices on the counter. If you’re really dedicated you may have the pre chopped ingredients waiting for you in the fridge.
