Shapes, Shapes, and More Shapes

I am in love borderline obsessed with the educational toy company, Melissa and Doug. I love that their products are made of great materials and that their toys provide children of all ages with learning opportunities that are fun and colorful. Given my love for all things Melissa and Doug, when I saw a Melissa and Doug First Shapes Jumbo Knob puzzle at my local TJ Maxx, I knew I had to have it.

This puzzle is of a cottage that features all five of the major shapes (square, rectangle, circle, oval, and triangle) that make up the picture. It is designed for children ages 1+.

I bought this for my daughter when she was 13 months old. She could hardly say any more than ma-ma and da-da then, but I thought it would be a good idea to get her started on shapes. I mean, after all, that’s what all the moms in my playgroup were doing, so that’s what I did, too. Of course.

In the beginning, I was the one putting the puzzle together mostly and my daughter was the one jamming the pieces in her mouth. But within a few months, my daughter began attempting to do the puzzle. And while at first, she had a tough time placing the pieces back into their place, within a month she developed the coordination to “get the job done.”

So what do we love about the Melissa and Doug First Shapes Jumbo Knob puzzle now after having it for over a year?

  • Well, we both love the easy-to-hold wooden knobs.
  • She loves the picture of the house that kind of looks like our own house if you look at it upside down.
  • I love that there aren’t too many pieces to keep track of.
  • I love the sturdiness of the puzzle itself and that in lifting up the pieces, there are full-color matching pictures underneath.

I would wholeheartedly recommend this puzzle for parents who would like to get their toddlers started on shapes. The First Shapes Jumbo Knob puzzle is one of those toys that you’ll be able to keep and love for the long-haul.
