School Lunches are Not Cold Enough

Print Friendly

Are you one of those lunch packing mamas when it comes to back-to-school?  Did you know that an alarming number of kids’ lunches brought from home are not kept at a safe temperature?  I’m talking 98% of perishable  foods in sack lunches are kept at unsafe temps!  Yikes!

According to a new study in the Journal of Pediatrics a team of Texas reseachers have found that “98% of perishable foods in sack lunches are kept at unsafe temperatures even when the food is packed in an insulated lunch box or stored in a hot thermos. Texas researchers found that on average, kids packed lunches were approximately 22 degrees warmer than they should be, putting children at risk for foodborne illnesses.”

So, let’s keep these lunches cool with a few easy solutions from One Step Ahead:

PACkit Cooler Bottle & Lunch BagThis freezable, insulated bag eliminates the need for gel packs.  It’s already lined with eco-friendly gel.  Just fold and store in the freezer until you need it. Keeps food and bottles fresh and cold for up to 10 hours. ($19.95)

EZ-Freeze Energy Sandwich & Snack Containers — Keeps lunch-time sandwiches and snacks fresh and chilled, with these insulated, child-friendly containers! The freezer pack is housed outside the containers, away from the food, so bread/snacks don’t get soggy. Clips to backpacks and lunch boxes.  ($6.95, $4.95)

Insulated Lunch BagOne Step Ahead Exclusive.  Holds even bulky food containers (the kind that other lunch boxes can’t) & gives kids more carrying options, including a feel-good handle, hands-free shoulder strap, and handy backpack clip. Sturdy and well-insulated, with a separate drink compartment and secret pocket for notes.  ($16.95)
